Yesterday was an interesting day for Real Estate here in Danville, KY! We had a couple very unique experiences with long-term residents of our fair city, and I had to share them with you!
Early yesterday the phone rang here at the office. The 92-year-old gentleman on the other end of the line asks to speak to “the woman who married in to the Guerrant Family.” We explained to him that she was out of the office on an appointment at the moment, and offered him her voicemail. He declined, though he did leave his name and number, politely insisting that it must be “the woman who married in to the Guerrant Family” that return his call.
Naturally, when Mom got back to the office, she was given the message and went straight to her desk to pick up the phone. Thankful for the courtesy of the returned call, the gentleman explained that he was ready to sell his house, and wanted to work with her directly. He went on to say that he bought that house 50 years ago from R.P. Guerrant, my great-grandfather! How about that for some long term loyalty!
There are a couple remarkable things about this. First of all, he bought that house in 1960. What were you doing then? That was 19 years before I was even born! My parents were 12 & 13 years old. Second, 50 years is a long time. If he had just one cup of coffee every morning, that means he drank 18,250 cups in that kitchen. That’s a lot of coffee. Lastly, Mom met him at his home where he had just finished using his cell phone. Think he used that to call my great-grandfather?
To top the day off, we met with another lady yesterday afternoon who moved to Danville in 1985 at age 65 after retiring from her career in Lexington. Being the math wizard that I am, I figured she had to be around 90. She is moving to the wonderful McDowell Place assisted living facility here in Danville. She was such a lovely and intelligent woman, and we enjoyed getting to know her.
Now what are the odds that in one day we would get to meet two people in their 90′s, both of whom had it more together than me on most days? What interesting people they both were as well. I always love a good visit with a senior member of the community. They are always so full of wisdom and have seen so much! If I make it to 90, if I’m in half the shape of these two folks it will be a miracle!
